Performance over ATM Constant Bit Rate

چکیده
The TEN-34 network delivers today stable highspeed networking services to the European R&D community. At the same time research into more advanced backbone technologies is being carried out with the goal of making more sophisticated services such as bandwidth on demand available on the TEN-34 network. This paper describes the first phase of the experiments on advanced backbone technologies. A set of 10 experiments was defined and carried out for this purpose by the TERENA Task Force TEN. These experiments deal mostly with aspects of ATM, such as signalling, but also with new IP related technologies such as RSVP. The results were partly reassuring, and partly quite disappointing. Overall these experiments have shown that more time is needed to bring the advanced features of ATM to a mature state. This paper contains after a short introduction into the goals of the project the results of each of the experiments, presented by the leader(s) of the respective experiment in the TF-TEN. In a summary an attempt is made to assert the current status of backbone technology with regard to new services.

Performance and Bu ering Requirements of Internet Protocols over ATM ABR and UBR Services
The Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks are quickly being adopted as backbones over various parts of the Internet. This paper analyzes the performance of TCP/IP protocols over ATM network's Available Bit Rate (ABR) and Unspeciied Bit Rate (UBR) services. It is shown that ABR pushes congestion to the edges of the ATM network while UBR leaves it inside the ATM portion.
متن کاملDynamic Reservation Integrated Services Multiple Access for Wireless Atm Networks
A new dynamic reservation integrated services multiple access (DRISMA) protocol is proposed for the emerging wireless ATM networks. Compared to other PRMA-based protocols, DRISMA has two distinctive features. First, while each voice station reserves isochronous channels by capturing minislots, both the capturing probability and the number of mini-slots per frame are adjusted dynamically to enha...
متن کاملMPEG-2 Transport over ATM Networks
The growth of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technology and the maturity of coding standards have made the large-scale deployment of high-quality audiovisual services possible. In this article, we discuss the principal issues involved in transporting MPEG-2 streams over ATM networks for both constant bit-rate (CBR) and variable bit-rate (VBR) MPEG-2 Transport Streams. We review existing and p...

This paper presents a general traac control framework for Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks with its performance evaluation. The proposed traac control scheme can incorporate all the recently considered ATM service classes including Constant Bit Rate (CBR), real time Variable Bit Rate (rtVBR), non-real time Variable Bit Rate (nrVBR), Available Bit Rate (ABR) and Unspeciied Bit Rate (UBR...

متن کاملReliable Transmission of MPEG-2 VBR Video Streams over New Network Adaptation and ATM Adaptation Layers
This paper adresses the transmission of VBR MPEG-2 video streams on top of both Network Adaptation (NAL) and ATM Adaptation Layers (AAL) [1] for real-time multimedia applications. The NAL, speci c to MPEG-2, provides a selective data protection mechanism based on syntactic criteria. The AAL provides a reliable transmission by applying per-cell sequence numbering combined with a selective Forwar...
